Harlem (Dream Deferred)
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore” And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over” like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
I have always dreamed of living in California, always dreamed of making movies and using my influence to make an impact on the world in a major way. I became interested in acting while watching blacks in sitcoms growing up, like on “Good Times”, Different Strokes and “Facts of Life. I always figured I could of easily been tootie’s lil’ sister or either one of Todd Bridges love interest.
By the time I turned 16, my home life was chaotic, so I ran away. I went to an all girls group home in Manhattan. This turned out to be a wonderful experience for me. An actress from the soap opera “Another World” volunteered to teach acting to all of us girls. We had acting class twice a week and I got really into it. I remember my teacher pulling me aside and saying I really had talent and should stick with it. She was really special and I was inspired and I will never forget her kindness. While in junior college I decided to take theater acting and it helped me to really recognized my strengths and weakness and the physical aspect of acting. I continued my love for filmmaking and while studying social work at Morgan State University, I took a screenwriting class with an amazing teacher, who really enjoyed storytelling and film. I was inspired when he used my script for a reading in class and was choked up when he called me to read my own work. After class, my classmates were calling me the girl Spike Lee. I was so gassed up!!lol! I immediately started writing other scripts and I was ready to go. Ok, that was 1998……..
Fast forward to 2012….I live in an amazing loft in Downtown LA, I have my own production company, BorMik Productions with my partner and I’m working on finishing my first short film titled “Change”. We have various projects on the table and I am living my dream.
LESSON LEARNED: Dreams are not a final destination, they are a creative process meant to be fully experienced, each dream has way of cultivating and manifesting in their own divine time….Our job is to enjoy the journey…..
Be Free… Kim…
