Who is Helen?
Mary "Helen" Allen informally adopted me when I was 6 weeks old. Born in North Carolina in 1928, everyone called her Mama Helen. She took extremely good care of me and my very strong and kinky 4c Hair and grew it out to be, very long, healthy and strong.
She was superstitious and would clip my ends every Full moon at 8pm. She did my hair in the kitchen, like most Black Moms, She believed in protective styles for us both, while I rocked braids, Mama Helen rock her signature Wig looks, that she was known for.
Helen passed away, when I was 15 years old, as a teen, I was trying to keep up with the trends and my hair quickly began to brake off. I started to remember and use all the secrets and natural ingredients she used right from her kitchen cabinet and I quickly regrew my hair back to its original glory.
Now I am in Ghana, at Helen's Hair Kitchen in our Girl's Town, we make fair trade, hand mixed all natural hair products with ingredients grown from our farms and crafted Wigs with her name on it, assembled in our factory, in zero waste products, labels are personalized but optional.
